2016 – 2017 Concert Season

Nineteen is pleased to announce its sixth annual concert season at the Theatre on San Pedro Square, in the heart of downtown San Jose. The theatre is a warm and intimate venue, seating about 150. Its brick walls, exposed wood beams, great acoustics, and excellent views from all seats provide an ideal environment for the performing arts. A bar and concessions are available continuously throughout our concerts. Ample parking can be found close by, including an adjacent lot, a large municipal garage just across San Pedro Street, and a fair amount of street parking. The theatre spans the second floor of the brick building that houses historic O'Flaherty's Irish Pub, and Peggy Sue's Cafe, at street level.

Tiered ticket prices and group rates are available for many of our shows. Click the tickets under each event for details.

A Love Supreme
90th Birthday Tribute to John Coltrane

Saturday, October 22, 2016, 8 pm

Nineteen pays tribute to jazz master and saxophone legend John Coltrane. The concert will feature music written by Coltrane, as well as music from his illustrious career.

The centerpiece of the concert is Coltrane's seminal work A Love Supreme, arranged for jazz orchestra by the superb trumpet player, band leader, and jazz scholar Wynton Marsalis. Nineteen will be performing the West Coast premier of this unique and inspiring adaptation of Coltrane's classic suite.

John Coltrane's music attained an unprecedented spiritual depth, reflecting his conviction that leading a truly good and devout life, striving for ever-higher artistic purpose, would offer inspiration and hope to others. He once described his musical goals as "to uplift people, as much as I can. To inspire them to realize more and more of their capacities for living meaningful lives". Coltrane's revered drummer, Elvin Jones, said of A Love Supreme that, amongst his entire, prodigious recording career, it represents everything Coltrane stood for.

John William Coltrane would have been 90 years old on September 23rd. One of humanity's greatest artists, he passed away on July 17, 1967, at age 40.

A Tribute to Legendary Jazz Singer Ella Fitzgerald
...featuring our lovely, swinging vocalist, Ms. Juanita Harris

Saturday, March 25, 2017, 8pm

Nineteen Jazz Orchestra presents a tribute to the First Lady of Song, the great Ella Fitzgerald. Ms. Fitzgerald's career spanned some sixty years, during which time she performed with America's great jazz musicians, most notably the orchestra leaders Duke Ellington and Count Basie, and trumpeter Louis Armstrong, with whom she recorded several utterly charming vocal duets over the years. She performed in movies and TV, and with many musicians not associated with jazz.

In addition to her beautiful rendering of lyrics and melody, she was a tremendous influence in the development of jazz singing. She improvised brilliantly in the "scat" tradition and could swing as hard as any drummer or sax player.

Continuing this great jazz vocal tradition is our wonderful singer, Juanita Harris, whose own swinging style of scatting and interpreting the standards has been making audiences (and members of the band) happy for years.

Nineteen has acquired several of the original big band arrangements of Ella's repertoire and looks forward to presenting a memorable evening of vocal and instrumental jazz.

A Tribute to the Late Don Ellis

...and a guest performance by the West Valley College Jazz Ensemble
Saturday, May 6, 2017, 8pm

Nineteen concludes it 2016 – 2017 concert season at the Tabard with a program of pieces by the unique composer, trumpeter, band leader, and author, Don Ellis. Mr. Ellis's musical career was as eclectic as it was tragically short. Over a period of only twenty-two years, he played with many of the great jazz musicians, led a wide variety of ensembles – with which he toured the globe extensively and with great success, and wrote prolifically. His compositions are known for frequent use of unusual, asymmetric meters (just ask the band!), and unconventional tonal concepts. This reflects the influence of his studies of music from around the world. His ensembles at various times used electronics, a choral group, augmented brass ensembles, string quartets, tabla and sitar.

We are pleased to share the stage this evening with the West Valley College Jazz Emsemble, who will perform the first half of the evening's concert. Watch and listen as today's young artists continue the great evolution of jazz across generations.

We hope you can join us for this special evening.

2015 – 2016 Concert Season

Nineteen under the directorship of Ray Brown

Saturday, November 7, 2015, 8 pm

Nineteen's 2015 – 2016 concert season starts with an evening with Ray Brown, the celebrated composer, arranger, trumpeter, band leader, and educator. Mr. Brown is perhaps best known for his years playing jazz trumpet and writing for the Stan Kenton Orchestra. He has also worked with a myriad of other jazz luminaries (check his Wikipedia page for a detailed account of his prodigious carrier). Mr. Brown personally selected the music for tonight's program from his vast library of original compositions and tasty arrangements. Among these are his blazingly fast In Orbit, the hauntingly lush Impressions of Point Lobos, and his arrangements of the standard Stella By Starlight and the bossa The Dolphin.

Starting with adventuresome, densely-textured pieces written by Mary Lou Williams for the Duke Ellington orchestra in the '50s and '60s, through the post-bop intricacies of Toshiko Akioshi, the '70s' avant-gardist Carla Bley, and modernists Maria Schneider and Tamiko Tsunami.

Nineteen with Jazz Bassoonist Paul Hanson

Saturday, May 9, 2015, 8 pm

Nineteen continues its tradition of presenting the work of a diverse range of creative artists from the Bay Area and beyond. Tonight's program features the extraordinary jazz-bassoon virtuoso Paul Hanson. A celebrated classical bassoonist and jazz saxophonist, Mr. Hanson has "expanded the lexicon of the bassoon…[and] rewritten the rulebook for what is possible on this most classical of woodwind instruments" [from his website]. He has performed with dozens of world-renowned artists from across the musical spectrum, including Bela Fleck, Wayne Shorter, Peter Erskine, Billy Higgins, Steve Smith, Omar Sosa, Boz Scaggs, Tower of Power, Cirque Du Soleil, and many others.

Andrew Gilbert in Downbeat Magazine wrote:
Hanson has brought the double reed instrument into areas where it has seldom, if ever, gone before, combining a commanding improvisational sensibility with funk, classical, and world-music influences...Hanson produces a sound so full, lithe, and flexible that it is easy to forget the mind-boggling intricacies of the instrument producing it.

It is hard to overstate just how unlikely a quest Hanson has undertaken.

We hope to see you at this unique event. Much more information about Mr. Hanson, and a wide variety of soundclips, are at his website.

Nineteen plays Steely Dan

Saturday, October 19, 2013, 8 pm
For the inaugural concert of our 2013 – 2014 concert season, Nineteen presents a tribute to the iconic band Steely Dan, with fresh and provocative arrangements by modernist big-band writer Fred Sturm. A dozen Steely Dan favorites, like Do It Again, Pretzel Logic, and I Got the News, have been audaciously reworked by Mr. Sturm for nineteen-piece jazz orchestra, including—in addition to the usual cadre of brass, saxes, and rhythm section—bass clarinet, alto and bass flutes, contrapuntal hand-claps, and lots of wailing guitar.

Nineteen with Wally Schnalle

Saturday, May 3, 2014, 8 pm

Nineteen's 2013-2014 concert season at the Theatre on San Pedro Square concludes with a bang, with bandleader, composer, and drummer extraordinaire Wally ("it rhymes") Schnalle. An important force in the northern California jazz scene since the 1990s, Schnalle made his first recording as a leader in 1994, and his quintet, featuring renowned Bay Area musicians Dan Zinn on saxophone and John Worley on trumpet, performed at the Monterey Jazz Festival and other venues throughout California. Schnalle is also an editor at Drum! magazine, and is an active teacher.
His complex rhythmic style always grooves. Whether on straight-ahead jazz, funk, or any other genre, his playing, like that of all fine drummers, makes the listener feel good.
